Bioactivity of Lantana camara L. essential oil against Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabricius) Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Zandi-Sohani,Nooshin; Hojjati,Mohammad; Carbonell-Barrachina,Ángel A.
Lantana camara L. is a widespread plant species mostly native to subtropical and tropical regions of the world. In this study, insecticidal and repellent activities of L. camara essential oil were evaluated against Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabricius) (Col: Bruchidae). Analysis of chemical composition by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) showed high amounts of sesquiterpenes, mainly α-humelene (23.3%) and cis-caryophyllene (16.2%). The results showed that the essential oil of L. camara has strong repellent activity against adults of C. maculatus at all tested concentrations. After 2 and 4 h, 97.4 and 100% repellency was seen at highest concentrations of 0.4 μL cm-2, respectively. Moreover, the oil was found to be toxic to...

Chemical composition, insecticidal, and antifungal activities of fruit essential oils of three colombian Zanthoxylum species Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Prieto,Juliet A; Patiño,Oscar J; Delgado,Wilman A; Moreno,Jenny P; Cuca,Luis E.
This study determined the chemical composition of essential oils isolated from Zanthoxylum monophyllum (Lam.) P. Wilson, Z. rhoifolium Lam., and Z. fagara (L.) Sarg. fruits by steam distillation, as well as testing antifungal and insecticidal activities of essential oils as potential pesticides. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis identified 57 compounds. The main constituents in Z. rhoifolium oil were β-Myrcene (59.03%), β-phellandrene (21.47%), and germacrene D (9.28%) , the major constituents of Z. monophyllum oil were sabinene (25.71%), 1,8-cineole (9.19%), and cis-4-thujanol (9.19%), whereas fruit oil of Z. fagara mainly contained germacrene D-4-ol (21.1%), elemol (8.35%), and α-cadinol (8.22%). Zanthoxylum...

Diffusion and sorption of allyl isothiocyanate in the process of fumigation of maize AGRIAMBI
Paes,Juliana L.; Faroni,Lêda R. A.; Martins,Marcio A.; Dhingra,Onkar D.; Silva,Tales A..
The purpose of this work was to evaluate the transport of allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) by means of the sorption mechanism and the diffusion of AITC through maize grains. The experimental procedure to study the sorption mechanism was conducted by injection of AITC in glass flasks containing the grains. Kinetic models of zero, first and second order were fitted to AITC concentration data, with the purpose of determining the sorption rate (k). For the study of diffusion, a prototype was utilized in which the components are a gas chamber and a cylindrical column in which the grains were stored. At the interval of 110 min, samples in the chamber and in the column were collected, which were immediately injected into the gas chromatograph. In order to determine...

Feasible Fumigant-Herbicide System Alternatives to Methyl Bromide for Bell Pepper Producers AgEcon
Byrd, Mark M.; Escalante, Cesar L.; Fonsah, Esendugue Greg; Wetzstein, Michael E..
With the current methyl bromide (MeBr) system for producing Georgia’s peppers being phased out, alternative fumigant and herbicide systems for producers are analyzed. Using stochastic dominance analyses, two alternatives exceeding MeBr’s yield and financial efficiency were identified. A programming model, incorporating simulation-optimization techniques, generated optimal production and financial plans. Results indicate potential economic viability under alternative systems vis-à-vis the traditional MeBr production system. The Telone II and Chloropicrin combination with Metham potassium may offer a viable substitute for MeBr.

Profitability Efficiency Analysis of Methyl Bromide Fumigants and Mulch Systems Alternatives for Pepper Production in Georgia AgEcon
Ferrer, Myra Clarisse R.; Fonsah, Esendugue Greg; Escalante, Cesar L.; Culpepper, Stanley.
With the goal of looking for the best fumigant substitute not only effective to production yield but more importantly to profitability and its excellent corresponding mulching option, this study used the complete factorial treatment analysis approach. Seven fumigant options and four mulching alternatives were included in the study and results showed that 1,3-dichloropropene plus chloropicrin and metam sodium (TELPICVAP) and smooth low density black on black polyethylene mulch (METAL) are the most profitable fumigant and mulch option.

Volatile chemical composition and bioactivities from Colombian Kyllinga pumila Michx (Cyperaceae) essential oil Biological Sciences
Jaramillo-Colorado, Beatriz Eugenia; Martínez-Cáceres, Eduardo Luis; Duarte-Restrepo, Edisson.
The essential oil from the fresh leaves of Kyllinga pumila (Michx) was obtained by hydrodistillation and characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Twenty-eight volatile compounds were identified, major constituents of the oil were Methyl E,E-10,11-epoxyfarnesoate (43.8%), β-elemene (12.5%), Z-caryophyllene (11.3%), germacrene D (7.1%) and E-caryophyllene (5.6%). Repellent and fumigant activities of the oil against Tribolium castaneum Herbst (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), were done using the area preference method. Additionally, we studied their antioxidant and phytotoxic effects. Essential oils exhibited a dose-dependent repellent activity, with values 90% at the applied concentration (0.01%), for both two and four hour’s exposure....
